The Dallas-Fort Worth Alumnae Association (DFWAA) of Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority, Inc. was founded in December 2000 in order to provide its members the opportunity to continue their involvement with SLG after their collegiate years. As the Association grew in membership and experience, its scope was expanded to encompass much more than just fraternal obligations. The DFWAA benefits not only the sisters of SLG but the Dallas community as well.
Members of the DFWAA are as diverse in education and life experience as they are in culture. From education to engineering, the career paths of the women in this organization mirror the needs of the community and this is where a majority of their attention is focused. Each year the DFWAA participates in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® to raise money for Breast Cancer Awareness and Research, which is the sorority's national philanthropy. During the Christmas holidays, the group sponsors at least one young girl at the Bataan Center and throughout the year they support several other non-profit organizations, such as the Prom Dress Project, the North Texas Food Bank and the March of Dimes.
Although Community Service is one the principles of Sigma Lambda Gamma, this group takes it one step further and also focuses on Professional Development and Personal Growth. Each year the DFWAA hosts several programs focused on these areas. In May, they sponsored a Homebuying Seminar for the first time. This event was hugely successful, and the attendees received valuable advice from realtors, mortgage lenders, and other real estate professionals. In July they held a Financial Planning Seminar where Edward Jones representative Billie Meador provided the audience with tips on retirement plans, budgeting and planning for the costs of higher education. Both these events were open to the public and were well-attended.
For their efforts, the DFWAA has been presented with several national awards. In 2002, the Sigma Lambda Gamma National Board of Directors named them the Alumnae Association of the year. The group was also named the Alumnae Chapter of the Year in 2002 and 2003 by the National Association of Latino Fraternal Organizations (NALFO) and LatinoGreeks.com.
